54 reviews of South San Francisco Public Library “I owe my identity to West Orange Library. Borrowing CDs by Air, The Bad Plus and the Clash, to name a few, gave me a love of all pop music and jazz. I owe my college admission to a three-year “extended loan” of Barron’s SAT Prep, which dominated my weekends and summers. (You might have been cooler than me in high school, Nick, but look who has the degree!) Not least, I attribute my allergies to the library’s commercial carpet. If you’re like me and spent the best years of your life at West Orange Library, you will be glad to know that it has hardly changed. Sure, they’ve added DVDs, Internet terminals (and now Wi-Fi) and cut back the hours on Wednesdays and Thursdays. But much of the rest is the same. You can still get polite service and reading tutoring from resume-padding high schoolers. You can still find a lot of popular novels and magazines on the shelf. You still needn’t wait long to get a spot in the best seat in the house: the periodical cove on a sunny afternoon. You can even talk to the librarians you met in childhood! (Working together for years and years, you have to wonder if they ever got it on.)Above all, West Orange Library has shown me it IS possible to be frugal and lead a fulfilling life.Sure, West Orange Library has long been overshadowed by nicer facilities in tonier parts of the county; San Mateo, Millbrae and Burlingame all have larger collections, better lighting, and more comfortable seating. But from the Top of the Hill to Tanforan, West Orange is the only library that matters.”
